zero lot line

The construction of a building on the boundary lines of a lot. This usually is the front line (e.g., a store built directly to the sidewalk). In the older neighborhoods of some American cities, it is also common for residences to be built up to the sidewalk.

zone

An area of a city (or county) that is set aside for a certain purpose, such as an industrial zone.

zoning board

see planning commission.

zoning bylaw

A rule passed by the local government that regulates the use of property within that municipality, such as the placement of buildings on land or the maximum floor areas of houses in a subdivision.
